Oh, the Places You’ll Go …

When I was in college, our mental health therapist, Tony Onorato, had us read “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss as a team before film. We did not understand the exercise until we really listened to the message.

Basketball has provided me many opportunities in life, from traveling all over the world, friends, job opportunities, and being able to impact others. I always tell my student-athletes to use the game as a tool to get what they want in life, because it will eventually stop bouncing like it did for me my first year playing professionally in Hungary.

I was reading something by Kevin Eastman, former NBA coach and now motivational speaker.

He said,

“In my mind, success is a journey and not simply a trip. To me, a trip is finite; we go somewhere and we return. But if we are on a journey, we never arrive. We just keep on traveling.”

This message is timely as I get ready to take my team to Japan to compete against other universities from Asia in the World University Basketball Series.

I was able to play overseas a few times while I was in college and it taught me a lot. I actually learned more off the court than on it. My hope is that this experience helps my student athletes keep on traveling in their journey of life the way it did for me.
